Broadband Access Overview

It is estimated that there are up to 25% of telephone subscribers who can not get any Broadband service by Telcos over existing copper infrastructure because of various technical reasons. The main technical reasons are the following:

  1. Customers are out of VDSL and ADSL reliable reach
  2. Customers are connected over pair-gain systems (PCM systems)

In addition there are many areas which are not profitable for ADSL or VDSL deployment. Typically ADSL and VDSL equipment is aimed at high density populated areas. High fixed overheads make this equipment unsuitable for rural and low density areas where customers are widely dispersed. In order to solve mentioned problems today the Telcos have to bring IP infrastructure closer to customers. That includes digging the ground and putting new cables, building up new distribution points with local powering and installing DSLAMs. All these activities are time consuming (bureaucracy) and/or capital demanding with long ROI. Telcos are likely to loose the customers to ILECs with cable or wireless technology. EMX-N44 may be used to by-pass all the mentioned problems, because it provides solution in a different way: without building new infrastructure, just with better usage of existing one, which in turn means without bureaucracy hurdles and with minimum investments which may return in a few years or less. EMX-N44 is the most compact and most economical IP-DSLAM on the market specially designed for fast and easy deployment of Broadband services in places where ADSL/VDSL deployment is not possible or not economical.

What is EMX-N44

EMX-N44 is decentralised remotely powered ultra compact 4-port IP-DSLAM with SHDSL uplink. It enables to connect 4 Broadband ADSL-like subscribers over one copper pair over extended reach.

Technology used in EMX-N44

SHDSL technology is used to extend the reach from COT to RT unit and can ensure further loop extension by means of repeaters. SHDSL provides symmetrical or asymmetrical data transmission to all subscribers.

IP-DSLAM functionality

EMX-N44-S RT with integrated splitters is a full featured IP-DSLAM which connects over one copper pair to SHDSL COT card at exchange side and provides up to four (4) DSL connections to CPE equipment at customer's premises. It is designed to meet WT- 101 requirements for Internet security. All subscribers are fully segregated in entire EMX aggregating structure. Tag-VLAN on per port basis provides further segregation/association possibilities. PPPoE intermediate agent and DHCP relay agent (option 82) functionality may be used for preventing malicious Internet usage. EMX-N44-S remote DSLAM comes in two versions: in extremely small metal housing for installation in existing cabinets and in compact plastic outdoor housing for installations on poles and walls.

The EMX-N44 Equipment

Equipment at CO side (COT equipment)

The equipment at CO side resides in standard 19'' shelf UAR-x14. It consists of the following cards:

  • Several COT SHDSL cards (up to 13 in one shelf): ................... EMX-E04-E
  • Aggregating switch (1 in each shelf) (option): .............................. EES-x16
  • Telemanagement card (1 for several shelves) (option): .................. CTL-03

The equipment collects and aggregates IP and voice traffic from all mini remote DSLAMs which are connected over
SHDSL lines. Internet uplink connects with FE or GE to higher level L3 switch (e.g. Cisco 4506). POTS connections
are connected to PSTN switch via a/b wires (Z interface). Note that each COT SHDSL card supports 4 SHDSL interfaces. Thus up to 52 mini IP-DSLAMs EMX-N44-S are supported by one UAR-x14 shelf!

Equipment at remote side (RT equipment)

Equipment is installed on poles or walls, existing pole or wall enclosures or in existing street cabinets.

  • RT mini DSLAM box: .................................................................. EMX-N44-S

RT mini DSLAM box provide full IP-DSLAM functionality and connects to COT cards via SHDSL over 1 copper pair. Up to 4 CPE equipment EMX-NT1 may be connected to one RT. (POTS phone may be also connected directly if no Broadband data is required.) RT unit is powered remotely over SHDSL line. Splitters are integrated.

Equipment at customer premises (CPE equipment)

Equipment is installed in customer's residence in 1,2 km radius from RT unit (0,6 wire).

  • CPE unit: ......................................................................................... EMX-NT1

CPE unit connects to RT via twisted copper pair and provides 1 POTS interface and 1 Ethernet interface. One can connect to Ethernet interface: PC computer, Router, Eth. switch, VOiP gateway, VOiP phone...
The unit is powered from mains. Splitter is integrated. In case of power failure the POTS service is not disturbed
(Lifeline ensured).
